First: what's already built into Shopify
Before installing a single app, here's what your Shopify plan already includes for retention. Most merchants don't use half of these.
Shopify Email
Send newsletters, product announcements, and basic automated campaigns. It pulls your product catalog directly, supports segmented lists, and tracks opens and clicks. It's basic compared to Klaviyo, but for a store under 10K emails/month it covers the essentials.
Best for: Post-purchase follow-ups, new product announcements, win-back emails.
Shopify Flow
A visual automation builder. You can trigger actions based on customer behavior: tag customers after their second order, send an email when someone hasn't purchased in 60 days, or auto-segment high-value buyers. This replaces a lot of what paid apps charge for.
Best for: Automating customer tagging, triggering retention emails based on behavior, building simple loyalty logic without an app.
Customer segments
Create dynamic segments based on purchase count, last order date, total spent, location, and more. Use these to target different messages to one-time buyers vs repeat customers vs lapsed customers.
Best for: Splitting your customer base so you can send the right message to the right group.
Shopify Inbox
Adds a chat widget to your store. You can see the customer's order history during the conversation, set up automated FAQ responses, and respond from your phone. Stores that use live chat see roughly 12% higher repeat purchase rates — because answering questions in real-time reduces pre-purchase anxiety.
Best for: Converting hesitant visitors and resolving post-purchase issues before they become returns.
Shopify Subscriptions
Add subscription options to any product. If you sell consumables (food, skincare, supplements, pet supplies), this converts one-time purchases into recurring revenue with no manual follow-up. The customer sets their schedule and auto-renews.
Best for: Consumable products with natural reorder cycles.
Free third-party tools worth adding
Huzayl Lab Retention Report
That's us. Drop in your Shopify orders export CSV and get your repeat purchase rate, drop-off by order number, cohort retention heatmap, median days to second order, and first-product analysis. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing leaves your computer.
Best for: Understanding your retention numbers before spending money on tools to fix them. Try it →
Klaviyo (free tier)
More powerful email automation than Shopify Email. Behavioral triggers, multi-step flows, predictive analytics on higher tiers. The free tier is tight (250 contacts), but if you're just starting and want to build proper post-purchase sequences, it's a good foundation to grow into.
Best for: Small stores that want sophisticated email automation from day one.
Limitation: 250 contacts is very small. You'll hit the paid tier quickly.
Smile.io (free tier)
Points-based loyalty program. Customers earn points for purchases, account creation, and referrals. Free tier includes a branded rewards page and basic analytics. Industry data suggests a roughly 5% repeat rate improvement for stores with active loyalty programs.
Best for: Stores with repeat-friendly products (consumables, apparel) where giving customers a reason to accumulate points makes sense.
Reality check: Only about 15% of loyalty points ever get redeemed. A loyalty program alone won't fix retention — it has to sit on top of a good product and experience.
Okendo (free tier)
Automated review request emails, photo and video reviews, display widgets. Review request emails have 2–3x higher open rates than promotional emails, and customers who engage with reviews have roughly 23% higher lifetime value.
Best for: Building social proof that helps both conversion and retention. New customers who read reviews trust the product more and are more likely to come back.

The order to set them up
Don't install everything at once. Here's the priority:
- Run your retention report — know your numbers before changing anything.
- Set up Shopify Flow — auto-tag customers by purchase count and segment them.
- Build 3 email flows (Shopify Email or Klaviyo) — post-purchase check-in, replenishment reminder, win-back.
- Enable customer accounts — optional at checkout, offered post-purchase.
- Add subscriptions — if you sell consumables.
- Consider loyalty/reviews — once the basics are running smoothly.
The first four steps are free and take less than a day. They'll have more impact than any paid tool you install on top of a broken foundation.
When to go paid
Free tools cover the first 80% of retention work. Consider paid tools when:
- You've outgrown free email limits and need advanced segmentation (Klaviyo paid, Omnisend)
- You want RFM scoring and predictive analytics (Polar Analytics, Lifetimely)
- You need SMS campaigns alongside email (Klaviyo, Postscript)
- Your loyalty program needs tiers and VIP treatment (Smile.io paid, LoyaltyLion)
But don't pay for tools until you've exhausted what's free. And don't pay for analytics until you've looked at the data you already have.
